Position Summary
Manage North American Delivery (NAD) and Staples Business Delivery (SBD) carrier RFP evaluation process, contract negotiations, supplier performance and relationships. Accountable to provide the highest level of service for the lowest sustainable delivered cost (North America). The position manages up to $300M in annual transportation spend, 50+ primary suppliers, supporting customer deliveries, international shipments, domestic inbound and outboun volumes.
Primary Responsibilities
- Responsible for transportation procurement for North America business units (NAC, SBD, Quill)
- Lead multi-round transportation services RFPs, primarily within Courier transportation mode
- Negotiate sustainable transportation contracts that meet/ exceed P&L/budgets requirements
- Optimize transportation spend through the strategic selection/ utilization of "best in class" carriers
- Develop with support of Finance, annual budget savings/expense forecasts
- Select carriers who have the capability to meet/ exceed the required level of service
- Proactively monitor performance against contractually established financial/ operational metrics
- Monitor current and targeted carrier operational and financial fitness levels
- Preparation and communication of contingency plans to support operations
- Provide guidance to the organization on impacts of DOT mandated rules and regulations
- Partner with Legal and Risk Management to address and mitigate business risk/ issues
- Define project objectives, scope of work, timelines and success criteria for cross functional teams
- Identify and implement continuous operational and financial improvements
- Provide guidance to Director of Carrier Management surrounding transportation trends in the marketplace that further enhance Staples capabilities and customer service offerings.
- Develop/ improve contractual program constructs to reduce risk and drive sustainable operations Lead decision process for carrier selection supporting transportation operations teams
- Facilitate internal and external stakeholder discussions, necessary to navigate successful outcomes to complex procurement issues (i.e. Legal, Risk Management, Operations, Sales, A/P)
- Negotiate contractual programs directly with third party C-level Mgmt
- Effectively adjust and adapt own style and approach when engaging multi-tiered organizations
- Lead and facilitate cross functional team projects and initiatives
- Develop skills and capabilities through mentoring from Director of Carrier Management
- Oversee responsibilities and performance of team and company objectives
- Support mentoring and coaching for in-direct reports (Sr. Analyst, Courier Support Manager’s)
- Define and execute multi-year procurement and negotiating strategies
- Identify, socialize, and present impactful recommendations that offer game changing results
- Architect sustainable contract structures that provide for dynamic operational flexibility
Basic Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Logistics or related field
- 6+ years of operational and procurement experience with Transportation/Supply Chain
- Strong negotiating skills
- Robust knowledge of transportation laws and regulatory issues
