The SEO Manager, Digital is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive organic search strategy to drive high-quality traffic and improve visibility across digital channels. This role leads SEO initiatives, manages performance metrics, collaborates with cross-functional teams (Content, Digital Experience, Product, Analytics, and Engineering), and ensures best-in-class technical and content optimization. The SEO Manager provides strategic oversight for organic search programs and aligns tactics to business goals while mentoring junior SEO talent or managing vendor relationships.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Develop strategies to drive profitable growth in the SEO channel by collaborating with internal and external partners, including search engines, networks, agencies, etc. and infusing a cultural change towards SEO throughout the Staples
  • Further the SEO culture through steady communication of strategies & best practices for Staples.com and StaplesAdvantage.com
  • Coordinate with agencies, merchants and marketing program managers to optimize content & identify content gaps
  • Guide prioritization and implementation of Vendor, Product and Engineering efforts as relates to SEO
  • Collaborate with product and engineering teams on major technical initiatives to improve or maintain SEO and provide feedback on tradeoffs when SEO could be impacted by engineering changes
  • Manage and mentor a team of 1-2 SEO analysts
  • Establish SEO guidelines and help to integrate into plans and roadmaps for other internal departments
  • Analyze competitor landscapes to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Present and communicate directly with stakeholders with varied levels of SEO or digital marketing knowledge.
  • Perform keyword research and manage search index via internal linking and SEO tag management to increase SEO traffic and improve ranking on SERPs
  • Effectively communicate the impact of changes on the customer experience, merchandising, content, site etc. have on SEO. Provide data and actionable insights to partner teams
  • Ensure core web vitals, navigation, and discoverability criteria are met for high intent search shoppers; partner with digital site experience teams to launch new templates and update existing pages to optimize SEO.
  • Work closely with other SEO and Paid Search marketing teams, in-market sales leadership, product managers, and engineering teams to forecast search trends, analyze actual performance, and understand year-over-year (YoY) and week-over-week (WoW) variations in branded and unbranded traffic for our print business.

What’s needed- Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Business, Communications, Computer Science, or a related field required or relevant work experience.
  • 7+ years experience in SEO or digital marketing roles
  • 3+ years experience in a leadership, supervisory, or project ownership capacity
  • Proven track record of managing enterprise-level SEO programs with measurable business outcomes.
  • Hands-on experience with SEO tools (e.g., Google Search Console, BrightEdge, SEMrush, Screaming Frog, Ahrefs).
  • Strong understanding of HTML, JavaScript, and web technologies relevant to SEO.
  • Experience leading technical audits and resolving complex SEO issues.
  • Advanced proficiency in analytics platforms such as Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics, or similar.
  • Advanced understanding of search engine industry and algorithms. Familiarity with programming languages including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XHTML and AJAX
  • Highly proficient in Excel/Word/Powerpoint with the ability to analyze data and prepare reports presentation. Previous experience using web metric programs (Omniture, Dart Search, Core Metrics etc.)

What’s needed- Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in eCommerce, retail, or multi-brand environments.
  • Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) such as Adobe Experience Manager or WordPress.
  • Working knowledge of schema markup and structured data implementation.
  • Google Analytics or SEO-related certification (e.g., BrightEdge Certified, Google Analytics IQ).
