Position Summary:

The VP Supply Chain Systems partners with both the business and technical teams to innovate and deliver new features and enhancements for Supply Chain systems, Robotics and the Order Management Systems (OMS) platform.  This position focuses on providing technology expertise and thought leadership on design, development, and support of business facing Supply Chain solutions. Partners with Business stakeholders to inform and drive technology based supply chain transformation.

This position leads Engineers, Product Managers, Quality Assurance & Operations teams etc. to develop innovative solutions that meet Supply Chain business needs with respect to functionality, performance, scalability, reliability, realistic implementation schedules, and adherence to development goals and principles.

  • Accountable for all activities and results of Supply Chain Systems and Applications, OMS and Legacy OMS. 
  • Thought leader in driving change to transform the applications and team, with a key focus on delivery and execution 
  • Directs the planning of short and long-term systems strategies for the area. 
  • Ensures that appropriate information technology is applied in solving business problems and that information system processes, technology and capabilities enable the business decisions. Functions as a consultant to the business on implications of emerging technologies. 
  • Is responsible for plans to integrate system designs to meet changing business requirements. Makes sure that technology resources are effectively obtained and operated under corporate guidelines.

  • Speed to market/lead time reduction for both new and existing products

  • Applies managerial and operational controls to maximize return on technology and personnel investments. As a member of the senior management leadership team, takes part in operating decisions. 
  • Reviews annual program budgets, and makes sure that the plans of the group merge with plans of other groups across Staples. Provides input to prioritization and determines the allocation of resources to group and systems efforts. 
  • Drives change across the Order Management & Supply Chain Systems organization with a focus on continuously improving technology delivery capability.
  • Foster an innovative environment where teams build future generation systems while ensuring stability of the current application ecosystem.
  • Ensures that performance standards are realistically set and attained.
  • Provides leadership and direction and recommends strategy for area managed. 
  • Collaboration with multiple teams across Staples Robotics including Supply Chain Business teams, Engineering, and Logistics
  • Participates with other VPs in establishing recommended organization structure for area managed, and developing organizational capability needed to execute strategy.
  • Marshals the necessary resources (direct and indirect) across the organization to deliver on the systems commitments which enable the business.
  • Fosters an effective organization with the growing capabilities and talents needed to deliver the plans of the organization.  Leverage industry best practices to fundamentally improve the value equation for delivery of IS capabilities.
  • Establishes organizational procedures and plans, consistent with company policy. 
  • Ability to foster strong cross-functional relationships.
  • Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of the functional area, business strategies and the company' s goals in addition to industry knowledge.

  • Responsible for implementing, testing and optimizing advanced robotic systems 
  • Leads the for Integration and Test Engineering, New Product Program Management, Performance Analysis and Technical Relationship Management. This is a critical leadership role with significant visibility and impact.

  • Marshals resources across numerous shared services areas to deliver on the plans of the organization.

  • This role is responsible for deciding the best technical direction to ensure uninterrupted business operation; In the case of a service interruption, is responsible for decisions on how best to restore business functionality.
  • Must be able to deliver projects/initiatives utilizing Agile development methodologies.
  • Drive long-term strategy, execute on plans, develop processes and partnerships, maintain internal customer relationships

Innovation and Change:

  • The role requires continual review of existing processes and departmental functions to ensure existing solutions continue to be effective, and the creation of new processes and methodologies to adapt to changes in the business and IT climate.
  • This role requires the development and adaptation of newly identified IT methodologies and the ability to role these out organization wide. 

Internal and External Customers / Suppliers:

  • The position requires establishing and maintaining partnerships with various business teams and has regular interactions at the Staples Leadership Team level.
  • This position requires direct external customer contact when working with the business on issue resolution, or the development and delivery of new Supply Chain capabilities.
  • The role interacts with external vendors such as labor management, software tools and monitoring solutions.  This involvement is at the Director, VP and C level management.

People Leadership:

  • Oversees responsibilities and performance of team.  
  • Conducts full performance appraisals and coaching for direct reports.
  • Transformational leadership across the organization to ensure appropriate department alignment to achieve common goals.   
  • Build a talent strategy and guide, mentor and coach individuals and leaders. You will champion data-driven decision making and be passionate about improving the metrics for your business.

Business Strategy:

  • This position participates in the planning and execution of IT solutions that meet the key business goals in both short and long-term planning. 
  • This role requires interaction with the individual business owners at the project level to ensure timelines, requirements and overall business goals stay on track. 
  • This position will be involved in various business strategy discussions as it relates to IT capabilities, implementation and delivery of key projects for business strategy success
  • Ensures Staples Robotics supply chain exceeds requirements and enables scale.


  • Bachelor’s Degree required 
  • 15+ years of IT leadership experience with progressive scope and responsibility in deep software engineering, application development on a global scale
  • Strong knowledge of Order Management & Supply Chain Systems - including technical understanding of warehouse management, order fulfillment/management, transportation management and low-cost algorithm applications
  • Proven success leading large, diverse teams
  • Previous supply chain management and/or ecommerce preferred as it allows a broader understating of the full end to end life cycle of order management from initial order to delivery.  
  • Excellent listening ability to understand Staples short-term and long-term business needs, goals, and strategy.  
  • Demonstrated thought leadership and a high degree of broad technical expertise and credibility. 
  • Outstanding ability to influence senior executive leadership, executive peers, and other internal and external stakeholder groups, and communicate in a clear, concise and effective manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, as well as an ability to work with cross-functional teams.

  • Demonstrated experience with the use data analytics and KPIs to drive improvements to the bottom line.
  • Experience with quarterly business reviews, reporting metrics as well as generating useful management and control reports.
  • Implementation experience with supply chain and process improvement 
  • 5+ years’ experience in the design of complex electro-mechanical products and equipment.
  • Detail oriented with strong organization skills, ownership, and follow through. Willingness to roll up sleeves and do what needs to get done to consistently deliver results

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A good understanding of Information/Application security on premise and on-cloud Expert understanding of foundational architectural concepts and architecture frameworks and tools, defining and implementing enterprise information architecture and MDM solutions
  • 3+ years of hands-on technical experience and conceptualizing large scale data solutions, preferably using one or more of the following technologies --- Hadoop, Teradata, Microsoft Analytics Platform System (APS), IBM Netezza, etc.
  • 3 years of experience in building and implementing an architecture roadmap for next generation enterprise data and analytics solutions
  • 3 years of experience in working with emerging big data technology vendors (e.g. Cloudera, Hortonworks, Datastax) 
  • Data Science or Analytics (machine learning, analytical models, etc.)
  • A good understanding of the architectural principals of web based platforms including SaaS / PaaS, multi-tenancy, multi-tiered infrastructure and application servers.
  • Excellent strategic thinking, problem solving and analytical capabilities with ability to synthesize large amounts of commercial business information and logically structure them into IT elements that build practical solutions.
  • The ideal candidate will possess a solid knowledge of manufacturing processes across the electro-mechanical space.
