Architect Software Engineer

This is a position on the team that is responsible for driving all recommendations on Staples. We serve close to a 100 million requests a day while generating around a quarter billion data events that get consumed by different machine learning data pipelines. We also hit an SLA of under 80ms end to end response time for 99.9% of our requests.

You will get to build robust and scalable systems that will power the next generation personalization suite for Staples. Making complex machine learning and data models run so fast that they are indistinguishable from magic will become your day job. 

You will get to work on every aspect of the “Concept to Cash” flow. We love to keep our engineering teams polyglot & full stack. By that we mean our engineers routinely drive systems design, web services, front end, infrastructure automation, build & deployment automation, product analysis & test automation! 

Most importantly, you will get to work with a diverse team of engineers and data scientists who love their big data, a well made coffee and a close game of foosball!

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Hands on development, design and testing of high throughput, low latency systems
  • Lead from front when it comes to testing - guide the team to build appropriate unit, functional and integration level test suites
  • Plan and execute incremental redesign and refactoring of legacy systems
  • Design & automate the CD pipeline
  • Mentor team members to help the team become more proficient and efficient while being empathetic
  • Take ownership of API SLA i.e. build with SLA in mind and support when SLAs are broken
  • Collaborate with Product, QA, Data Science, Integration and Support teams to build a product and not just write code.


Basic Skills:

  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Math, Physics, or other technical field
  • Proficiency in one or more languages among Java, Clojure, Scala, Python or Javascript
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant software development experience with proven track record of taking to and maintaining complex web services in production
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a technical leader who was responsible for designing, developing & being responsible for a system’s uptime
  • Deep understanding of SQL and NoSQL services - development as well as operations
  • Deep understanding of designing asynchronous systems using open source queues
  • Deep understanding how to building high availability and low latency systems on the JVM
  • Understanding of an agile software development methodology (Scrum or XP preferred)

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience developing large-scale web-based applications and distributed systems
  • Experience in operationalizing and debugging HA deployments of Postgres, Kafka, Redis etc.
  • Experience working on distributed / remote delivery teams
  • Demonstrated understanding of the JVM and its ecosystem
  • A thorough understanding of how business needs drive product features
