After what I’ve experienced at Staples, I shoot for amazing every day. And when I look at all we’ve accomplished over the last 15 years, plus the current talent we have within the company, I really do believe anything is possible.
I’ve worked my way up from an Associate Buyer to Director of the Staples Brand Group, and along the way I’ve pursued my MBA and raised three kids. Now I’m all set to build our presence in the international markets. We’re working closely with stakeholders around the world to ensure we are globally consistent. I love what I’m doing now and it’s very exciting to be making the Staples vision happen.
We’ve set our sights high, so investing the time and attention to make life easy for others is critical to getting things done — especially when there are so many balls in the air.

I grew up near Staples’ first store in the Boston area, and I’m still amazed at how large we’ve become in such a short space of time. As we grow, it’s our associates who are critical to our success, and by managing Internal Communications for Staples Europe, I make sure everyone stays connected.
My various roles have all been rooted in my passion for communications, but each one has given me a chance to work with different people and projects. I have always found that Staples encourages associates to explore opportunities in different areas of the business. And to anyone who’d like to join, I’d tell them to think beyond the job they’re applying for, because there are plenty of paths to explore.
My best Staples memory? Without a doubt it was when I was running the Boston Marathon, and looked up to see my fellow Marketing team cheering me on with Easy Button signs.

I was just starting my family when I was offered a position with Staples. I wanted a stable company, and Staples had a great reputation as a strong organization with good people. Today I can look back and know I definitely made the right decision.
I’ve not only seen my own career progress in leaps and bounds, but those of the team I support, too. In the past two years alone I’ve promoted two Sales Managers and a General Manager from my store. There are countless other examples of how Staples continuously rewards and promotes those who achieve results. Because the more leaders we have, the stronger we’ll become.
In 2010 I was recognized for my exemplary retail scorecard. I’ve never been prouder then when I was whisked away to Jamaica for a trip to the President’s club to be honored in front of some of the most senior people in Staples and, most importantly, my wife.

My career’s come full circle. I started in Contract Finance as a Senior Analyst but then took a break to explore Corporate Finance and Pricing. Both were invaluable experiences and helped me appreciate the sheer scale of Staples and how all the pieces fit together. Now I’m back in Contract Finance — and leading the team.
I’m incredibly proud that I’ve built my career by leveraging prior experiences. Applying lessons I’ve learned in the past to new settings has allowed me to take on new assignments so that I can continue to learn.
Staples has a culture of winning, which makes working here fun. We take care of each other and we act with ethics and integrity. After all, it’s only by doing this that we can get all the little things right so we can realize our vision of the easy customer experience.

Back in 2003 I joined Staples because I wanted to be part of an industry-leading, growing company with strong roots in entrepreneurialism. Over the years they’ve not only met these expectations, but have thrown in more than a few surprises along the way. That’s what I love about Staples — there are always nice surprises to look forward to.
My own career path has been driven by my interest in continuously learning, the cross-function nature of my various jobs and the guidance of my mentors. As I’ve developed, I’ve taken on a supportive role myself. In fact, my biggest achievement has been the growth of the people I manage.
A lot has changed in my own life over the years. I’m now married with two children so I can fully appreciate Staples’ supportive environment. My managers make me feel good about being a working mom and, as such, I’m confident that I can be successful, both professionally and personally.

Because I finished my vocational training with an “A,” I was named Germany’s best Staples apprentice and was able to visit the Staples Home Office in the U.S. After that impressive trip, I began my advanced training where I led a subsidiary store for 12 months. Finally, I became a real Store Manager in Bremen.
After opening the store at 8 am, I check out the sales and the accounting figures. Every day I try to coach employees on the German version of “inspired selling” as part of their development. I also motivate them and act as a role model, because if I expect something from them I have to stand behind it too. And it works, too — recently we were voted International Staples Store of the Year.
This year, we brought a sensational project to life when two of the strongest stores in Germany were led by our apprentices for a month. All associates and the Store Managers had to leave their stores and 30 apprentices took over. That really proved how much Staples trusts these young people as they help them to become the leaders of tomorrow.

When I joined Staples, I had just graduated and wanted a part-time job to tide me over while I looked for a way to start my career. Little did I know I’d already found it.
Since becoming a part of the family, I’ve enjoyed promotion after promotion. I have a whole host of managers to thank for supporting me and helping me settle into new roles (and often locations). My family and I have relocated six times over the years, and it’s definitely been worth it.
I’ve experienced some amazing things at Staples, and, even better, I feel I’ve played a big part in making them happen. My biggest achievement has been winning the Innovation Award. I submitted an idea for the Tech centre, which initially didn’t make the final cut. However, I was so sure that it would help our customers that I set it up in store anyway, and tested prices. The service took off and we expanded to other locations. At this point Staples recognized how useful the Express tech service was and rolled it out nationally. Now that was really cool.

I discovered Staples at my college job fair, and I’m extremely proud to say that this is still my only job out of college.
When I look back, the advice I would give is to network as much as you can. You also have to take on a certain level of risk to continue to elevate your career development, be willing to change and reinvent, and be prepared to relocate.
With so much going on and so much to do, it is really important that all our associates stay organized in terms of how they plan and manage their time. I try to plan my calendar out some four to six weeks in advance. This ensures I am focused on my top priorities each day regardless of what will be thrown at me when I wake up.
Staples has taken me to every corner of the United States, from Texas to Lake Tahoe and I’m sure there will be a few more adventures on the cards.
