Principal Business Analyst


The Principal Business Analyst is part of the Staples Digital Solutions team and independently works with relevant Staples' departments and external community to analyze and document complex business problems, business systems and process requirements of a given initiative; potentially spanning internal and external business entities.  The incumbent will use a variety of analytical tools and techniques relevant to the given initiative and have strong knowledge of the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Agile practices. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepare project Business Cases working with the Project Sponsor, Project Manager and Portfolio Manager 
  • Prepare for and conduct large-scale, complex, requirements and / or story gathering sessions 
  • Execute and coordinate the vendor selection process 
  • Analyze and document current and future state of business system deliverable, producing required lifecycle documents
  • Provide necessary analysis to support cost/benefit and total cost of ownership calculations
  • Provide input to project plan, risk assessment, and manage tasks to project schedule 
  • Conduct internal, external and industry related research 
  • Contribute to testing requirements and / or story and epic framework (scope, validation, planning, execution) 
  • Assist business with identifying, designing and implementing new processes 
  • Align business requirements and / or stories with Staples' strategy and vision 
  • Mentor other Business Analysts



Basic skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree  or equivalent experience
  • 5 – 8 years related IT business analysis or systems analysis experience with customer facing business applications
  • Experience defining business, functional requirements, use cases, and user stories for software projects
  • Working knowledge of Agile scrum processes such as backlog grooming and sprint planning and roles such as scrum master and product owner, and being able to run grooming, prioritization, retrospective and stand-up meetings, as needed
  • Effective use of business modeling and requirements management techniques: process, workflow modeling, use cases, product backlog management, user story definition, and prioritization
  • Experience working with multiple development approaches for internal and externally developed applications as well as packaged applications including incremental, waterfall, Agile Scrum, or Kanban
  • Ability to create and execute effective requirements work plans, and epic or story overviews 
  • Ability to identify risks, dependencies, scope items and non-functional requirements and communicate these with the team / Project Manger

Preferred skills:

  • Certification or at least training course work towards Business Analyst certification (CBAP) is preferred
  • Working knowledge of scrum management tools, e.g. Version One, Rally, Jira, is preferred
  • Strong communication skills including verbal, listening, written documentation, influencing, facilitation, presentation skills for technical or business audiences regardless of level
  • Strong facilitation skills and communication skills
  • Must exhibit strong self-initiative
  • Must be adaptable (including being quick to learn) and be able to act with a strong sense of urgency
  • Strong team player with attention to positive team dynamics
  • Certification or training course work towards Certified Scrum Master, Certified Product Owner, and Agile Certified Professional
