Senior Engineering Lead Supply Chain Technologies


Staples’ Supply Chain Technology Team is looking for an experienced Sr. Engineering Lead who wants to lead the development of Staples next generation forecasting, planning, and inbound systems. Our objective is to deliver innovative and simple-to-use solutions that generate increased value for our users.  This Engineering Lead position will work closely with some of the brightest software engineers and product managers to solve highly complex challenges. You will contribute towards system architecture, building highly-available and secure services based solutions.


You should be comfortable solving challenging business problems by creating innovative software solutions. The role requires leading the technical direction of the team, as well as designing for continuous integration, performance and scalability. You should be able to manage resources on multiple technical projects and ensure schedules, milestones, and priorities are compatible with technology and business goals. Successful candidates will thrive in fast-paced environments that leverage agile planning techniques, encourage and reward creative design, intelligent risk taking, and find innovative ways to leverage cutting edge technology.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Hires, trains, and manages a team of engineers.
  • Hands on developer for all aspects of system code using Java, Python, Pyspark, ETL, Hadoop
  • Works with technology management to develop business capabilities, technical strategies, implementation strategies and architectures
  • Leads the development and documentation of design models and implements systems according to specific strategies, standards and guidelines
  • Provides architecture and technical direction, ensuring solutions are strategically aligned with short term and long-term strategies and vision
  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge of the various business and system architectures of the company, of the system development life cycle, and of data resource management concepts, tools, methodologies, and techniques
  • Prepares and documents system solutions and proposals.  Reviews and understand tradeoffs, prototyping wherever necessary.  Provides recommendations to development team.
  • Partners with business and IT stakeholders to arrive at innovative solutions to leverage existing technology assets to create additional business value; makes recommendations for areas of additional investments to unlock further business value
  • Solves unique problems involving complex technical issues across multiple disciplines
  • Investigates new design and/or methodologies, techniques and tools and makes recommendations
  • Good hands on experience with application design and performance tuning experience in designing highly available applications
  • Develops a deep understanding of business domain strategies
  • Interacts with business partners




About You

Basic Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree or 10+ years relevant work experience
  • A minimum of 8 years of overall technical experience and a minimum of 10 years of business experience
  • Previous experience in Supply Chain or Forecasting or Planning systems
  • Java, Spring, AngularJS, REST, CSS, JavaScript, and GIT experience
  • Experience in delivering/administering web applications (Tomcat, WebSphere, MQ)
  • Experience in delivering web applications
  • Experience leveraging open source technologies
  • Experience developing with service oriented architecture
  • Solid understanding of software engineering frameworks, tools, and processes

Preferred Skills:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Engineering or related field
  • Previous management skills or team lead experience
  • Full-stack Java and Spring Cloud development
  • Python, Hadoop and Big Data experience
  • Self-starter with ability to execute on business objectives
  • Ability to foster innovation among team members and drive best practices
  • Strong teamwork and inter-personal skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
