Director Cloud Engineering
Position Summary:
Staples is currently embarking on a Cloud transformation program and is looking for a Director of Cloud Engineering.  The candidate will be responsible for development and execution of Staples’ Public and Private Cloud strategies,   driving the design, engineering, and application migration efforts in our move to the cloud.  Working closely with Information Security they will adopt a secure first policy and ensure that our systems remain compliant, adopt best practices  and are cost effectively auditable.  They will be active within the IT Infrastructure community and fluent on existing and emerging technologies.  They will focus on how best to operationalize existing technologies and work closely with Architecture to define the roadmap for adoption of new technologies and initiatives.  They will assist with continually refining the operational costs around existing vendor contracts.  They will work closely with Infrastructure Leadership to curate the medium and long term strategic vision for Staples’ Infrastructure.
  • Implement, and execute Staples Cloud strategy, building the transformation go forward cloud engineering team, and fundamentally changing the way Staples operates
  • Design and implement integration to AWS/Azure and ensure high quality designs
  • Set standards for migration and lead creation of patterns and to drive associated strategic cloud transformation.
    Responsible for and delivery of cloud and infrastructure solutions across multiple cloud providers
    Define key cloud strategies that will show benefit and direction over the next 1-3 years while mid-term tactically drive plans that will come to fruition in the next 3-18 months
  • Drive efficiencies in the cloud model to create overall increased stability and protect Staples revenue while allowing for increased funding for business initiatives
  • Build and retain a high performing team of cloud engineers
  • Manage strategic relationships with key suppliers for both cost, alignment, and innovation
  • Drive change through simplification and automation
  • Assist with defining clear financial models around usage, including policies around internal cost transfer and proposals for internal systems placements
  • Assist with transition of current operating environment to cloud environment and operating models
  • Significantly improve stability by showing year over year reduction in P1/P2 incidents in Staples application environment
  • Partner to reduce and optimize the cost structure of the Staples Operating Environment showing year over year improvement

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 10+ years of technical experience in all aspects of engineering from Storage, Compute, Network, Application, and Reliability Engineering
  • Deep understanding and experience with Amazon Web Services
  • Must have completed a cloud migration including multiple applications across different tiers, preferably including legacy systems.
  • Proven track record in architecting enterprise networks, implementation and engineering with Azure, AWS implementation and operations
  • Must have strong communication skills, presentation skills, ownership acumen, and be able to deconstruct complex problems and projects into execution detail.
  • Able to demonstrate a good knowledge of security infrastructure/software principles and practices.
  • Understand and able to navigate the complexities of PCI audit process at an enterprise level.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Transformation experience in a large organization
  • Understanding and experience in Google Compute Platform and Microsoft Azure
  • Full understanding of technically operating and running with financial discipline in various cloud operating models including Software as a Service, Infrastructure as a Service, and Platform as a Service
  • Full understanding of agile development practices and managing a full software development lifecycle
  • Previous experience in tools, infrastructure and consolidation at the enterprise level
  • Strong fiscal management
  • Proven track record of leading large enterprise projects from start to end
  • A Passion for learning and teaching others
  • Proven experience managing and developing projects with the ability to provide inspirational leadership and development
